Looking for hardwood flooring St. Louis and O’Fallon homeowners install once and love for decades? Hardwood flooring is a timeless choice that adds natural warmth, elegance, and value to any space. At County Flooring, we offer a wide selection of hardwood styles—from rich oaks and maples to exotic species—available in various stains, plank widths, and finishes to suit your personal style.
One of the key benefits of traditional 3/4″ solid hardwood is its longevity; many of these floors can be sanded and refinished multiple times over the years, allowing you to refresh their appearance or change the color as trends and tastes evolve.
While hardwood is a beautiful and durable option, it’s important to consider lifestyle factors. Homes with pets or heavy foot traffic may experience surface scratching, particularly with softer wood species. To help protect your floors, we recommend using area rugs in high-traffic zones and keeping pet nails trimmed. With proper care, hardwood flooring can remain a stunning and resilient foundation in your home for generations.
Our crew handles acclimation, layout, and install on every hardwood floor.

Both are real hardwood — the construction is what determines where each one fits. Here’s how they compare side by side:
Multiple layers of wood with a real hardwood veneer top
Solid piece of hardwood throughout
More stable—resists moisture and temperature changes
Can expand/contract with humidity
Can be glued, stapled, or floated
Typically nailed or stapled down
Limited (1–2 times depending on veneer thickness)
Can be sanded and refinished multiple times
Better suited for moisture-prone areas (not waterproof)
Not recommended for bathrooms or basements
Works over concrete or wood
Requires plywood or wooden subfloor
Often available in wider planks
More traditional widths (though wider options to exist)
Basements, condos, slab foundations, any level of home
Main and upper floors with controlled humidity
Typically more affordable than solid hardwood
Usually higher upfront cost
A well-installed and maintained hardwood floor lasts for decades, ages with character, and adds tangible value to a home. The grain, the warmth underfoot, and the way light catches a real wood surface are hard to replicate. For many of our customers, especially those planning to stay in their homes for the long haul, hardwood is the floor they’ll only install once. Homeowners across Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Chesterfield, and O’Fallon choose hardwood because real wood ages into a unique patina, holds resale value better than most surfaces, and rarely looks dated.
Hardwood comes in two main constructions, summarized in the comparison table above. Here’s the fuller picture on each.
Solid hardwood
Traditional 3/4″ solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood, tongue-and-grooved, and typically nailed or stapled to a plywood subfloor. It’s the longest-lived option on the market and the go-to choice for main-level living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and bedrooms in single-family homes. Solid hardwood is available in oak, hickory, maple, walnut, and other species, and is best installed over a plywood or wood subfloor above grade.
Engineered hardwood
Engineered hardwood is built from a real hardwood veneer over multiple cross-laminated layers of plywood or HDF. The top layer is genuine wood, so the floor looks identical to solid hardwood — but the layered construction makes it more dimensionally stable. Engineered works over concrete or wood subfloors, which makes it the typical choice for basements, condos, slab-on-grade homes, and any level below grade.
The species you choose affects color, grain pattern, hardness, and how the floor wears with age. The most-requested species in our showroom:
Finish matters too — matte, satin, and semi-gloss each read differently in real light. Our team will help you compare finishes against your cabinets, trim, and furniture in the O’Fallon showroom.

Hardwood is the floor most of our customers install once. The team behind the install is what makes the difference between a real-wood floor that ages beautifully and one that doesn’t sit right from day one.
